Representation of Gender - Doctor Who clip

4 points......

The Stereo typical: women have less power.
Power belongs to The Master (male)
later on in the clip the view challenges the stereo typical view by making Martha (female) have more power and the master sinks in power.

Camerawork
Martha
Start 0:00 -1:43 - Female - Low Angle - voice silent - Military outfit (Powerless)

Mise en scene
Martha
1:43 laughs (Looks happy) become brave and fearless speaks up to the Master
this signifies the power balance of men and women and that women are gaining more power.

Plot and Narrative

For camerawork this shows gender as unbalanced to begin with but gradually women gain power and the men sink to the same level of power. this is shown using a Low angle camera shot looking up at the master to connote power and strength while a high angle camera shot looks down at Martha to show that she is lower and less powerful. This is changed throughout the extract through body language and facial expressions as she starts laughing at the master when he feels he has succeeded in his plan, this is also connoted throughout the use of mise en scene due to the military styled outfit.

In the beginning of the extract of Doctor Who, it begins with Martha slowly walking towards the Master. Rather than a continuous shot many cuts occur, cutting back and forth to show what Martha sees and then back to Martha to show her facial expressions. This gives an emotional perspective of how Martha is feeling whilst creating tension between the characters. This however shows that as a woman Martha is feeling much weaker compared to the Master. He is viewed by the camera using a low angle shot. As he is at the top of a flight of stairs the effect of this is to give him a more dominant approach. The camera views Martha using a Medium shot throughout most of the extract to show off her body language  where her arms are neatly by her side and her movement is slow which connotes a feeling of cautiousness and nervousness but not afraid.

The camera angles are very different at the beginning of the extract as it goes into a close up of Martha’s face to show the importance of her facial expressions whilst it shows the masters whole body to show him as a more higher status being.

The lighting throughout the whole extract generally stays as Deep focus showing importance of every character and the fact everyone is equal in importance male or female. And the fact that Martha is wearing a black warfare outfit challenges the stereotypical view of women as she appears more stereotypical masculine (Tough and power craze)

The sound in general the background music for this extract starts of dramatic creating tension turning into a peice of composed music that creates mystery as though something is happening and then later turns to overpowering which fits well with the rest of the clip. This music is non diegetic.

Martha's voice when she starts speaking about half the way through is very sure that she is in control showing the power she acctually has over the Master whilst the Masters voice is also similar to this in the way that he thinks he has all the power when in fact he has non but does not know this. The Master then thinks that she is being stupid with prayer and belief but in fact it's not just this she has on her side. all this sound is diegetic as everybody in the room can here this.

Representation of gender through Mise en scene and Camera.

The opening Dialog camera work, "over the shoulder shot" 0:01
This shows that everyone is roughly the same height with slight differences which signifies that everyone is as a team and no one is above anyone showing that women are equal to men. However, the one guy is taller than most and is standing whilst everyone but the girl is sitting down on a bench which suggests that he is a possible leader which challenges this idea by showing the dominance of the man against the woman.

Synopsis:
This could connote the empowerment of men although it does challenge this stereotype by the fact the girls attitude is strong and angry and she fades into the background where she looks the same size as the man showing she gains more power from her actions and words.due to the fact this clip challenges itself over and over, this intrigues the audience to watch as they will be confused into who's side to take.

Mise en scene:
They appear to be in a park, this shows that despite the arguing between the man and girl they seemed to be in a fairly relaxed place, where everything seems fine; this is shown by the fact the other people in the group are sat down on the bench, resting.

Synopsis: I believe this clip is trying to show even though their is dominance in men, that women are just as powerful, but maybe show their power in different ways.

Coming Down The Mountain

Non Diegetic - Inside characters head.

A Non Dietetic Music Soundtrack is played at the start of the clip which to me connotes his heart beat pace while thinking. (a non dietetic talking in his head voice over.) The words that he is thinking seem to give of a sense of annoyance and anger that he has a brother with disabilities.
then it goes onto apes as a imagination thought.

Diegetic- Everyone can hear.

Arguing - this to me connotes anger.
- Downcindrome boy appears in first scene with the camera view in Big Close Up to emphasize him looking at his food and the image is a shallow depth of field as it blurs the background.
Cupboard door opening - Sound Perspective - boy cant get any cereals as downcindrome brother was portrayed as selfish by eating 8 wheat a bix in one bowl, Mise en scene - breakfast meal with Average family in the kitchen arguing.this leads onto spoon in bowls - Sound Motif 1.07 - Breakfast.low key lighting with deep focus whilst the boy frames the father who appears to have a blank ignorant look suggesting this happens a lot.
car - Ambient Sound
slinky - Sound effect - connotes Boredom
dad speaks - Diolouge
teacher speaks in class - incidental music
wouldn't it be nice song.- sound bridge - this connotes to me that he wishes his brother gone, with a sence of annoyance and see's his brother as a burden.
